For my company we use 37Signals online project management software. Been using is for almost 6 months and really like it, the online collaboration ability of it is initiative and easy to use. One thing I am having a problem with it though is its not very visual. I like to use MindNode at times to break complex task or projects down. I thought I could use it to create a nice visual timeline but its not ideal. I really hate gantt charts and simple want to show the project time line, and milestones in a very attractive visual way. Also with the ability to easily change the dates (as this always happens).
Project Management App Though there are many Project Management apps available online, working on tablets is certainly the best. This app allows PM's to create or import the Projects, edit them, add or delete task, set dependencies showcasing task relationship, add resources and set task status notifications. Project Planning Pro allows importing or exporting the Projects via mail or cloud services. The app is available for free to try. However, it requires an in-app purchase of $19.99 for unlimited access. Its totally worth the money spent. I've used quite a few project management/tracking apps (from MS Project to Basecamp, to JIRA, to Rally, to OmniPlan, and a few more.) and I've found that most are good for the PM to feel like they've got a handle on the work breakdown structure.
Most aren't that great at showing who has what, the status of tasks, and what's left to complete. I've finally settled on Trello for tracking projects. The flexibility of the tool (it's not a project management tool per se) allows you to customize it to the project.
When I'm doing product roadmap planning, I create columns for phase 1, phase 2, etc. And then use Trello cards with attached checklists, status colors, and assignees and move the cards/projects from column to column as the projects progress. For standard projects, it's the same but I might create a column for each project type or organization, etc. To me, Trello has the lowest friction to usefulness ratio of anything out there.
